THE CACTUS PARADOX: SEPTEMBER UPDATE

Patreon, gigs and Weezer!

Hello there! Josh from The Cactus Paradox here. I hope you've enjoyed our return to normal scheduling. In all honesty, behind the scenes wasn't a fun nor creative nor productive time for me between May and August. I've changed careers, began packing all my stuff up to move, and have generally just been working on myself. I've never expected this to be a massive thing, but it's kind of hard to use your creative outlet when you have no creative space to feel comfortable in. However, that has changed, as I'm currently writing this just days before I move in with some lovely friends and I will finally have some office space so I can lug myself out of bed every morning and crack on with content for the site. I thank each and every one of you who has helped me out during this time, and welcome any new followers of this little project! Anyway, you've seen the subheading, so let's discuss some stuff...

#1: Patreon!

Months after I said I'd do some sort of members only content (in the May update which has been scrubbed because oops, I didn't do anything at all), there is FINALLY a Patreon. I've set this up for a few reasons, but the main reason is that in January 2022, I will have to renew the website membership with my provider, and to do that, I need money. Now, hopefully by then, I will have a steady income as my freelance work becomes more frequent, but a small bit of support would go a long way to help keep this thing alive.

There are four tiers, all with exclusive bonuses, and it starts at just £1 a month! If 24 people dropped a quid a month from September through to January, that would actually smash our goal! Perks include polls determining future content, access to a Discord server (I will figure out how to use it), the chance to suggest content, and at the highest tier, you'll even get personalised hand-drawn Christmas cards and monthly recipe videos! PLUS, at 50 Patrons, I will be making my world-famous wings recipe for ALL Patrons to enjoy.

As a bonus for the first month, if you sign up at ANY level, you will receive a LIMITED EDITION TCP square Founder's badge for FREE! These will only be available to those who join during the month of September, so act now via the button at the top of the page!

#2: New Career?

I've never been much of a fan of working jobs, but I think that's because I haven't been in an industry that I love. Hospitality is probably one of the worst industries to be a ground-level employee in, and I've experienced some shitshows in my time working in bars, pizza places and cafés. However, I officially quit that industry at the start of June and have since been working to become a full time video editor! My university degree was in Media Production, but due to having a bit of a meltdown in the second half of third year, I only graduated with two years under my belt and kind of scared myself off of doing anything media-related for a year or so. But now I'm itching to get some videos looking splendid, and I have already worked with companies in Manchester and Leeds to help bring life to their projects! I'm already looking into doing my own occasional YouTube videos for the website, but if you or anyone you know is looking for an editor, then email joshroberthughes@gmail.com and I can make your project killer!

#3: The You Tubes and The Twitches

As mentioned above, I'm planning on doing very occasional YouTube videos and also some Twitch streams. My setup in my new place allows me to have a creative space, so I'm confident I'll be able to do stuff like turn my discussion posts into video essays and make some lists and ranking videos. It also may allow for me to start some streams on Twitch, however, I'm not gonna make any promises on that right now. Even though the branding of the website is very yellow-themed, I'm not trying to be the next Fantano or Nardwuar; I just enjoy doing other creative stuff that isn't just making music. I'm not expecting much to happen with a channel, it's just a fun medium so I can also hone my craft as an editor.

#4: Gigs? Gigs!

Hopefully, by the time this is up, we will have announced our first show back in Liverpool with Out Of Love, in which case, go and buy tickets now! The Cactus Paradox has also been the moniker under which I have put shows on around the UK for a few years now, so it's a massive relief to finally be back in the game. We are always looking for bands to put on both in and out of Liverpool, so don't hesitate to email us if you're after a show. We are also doing gig reviews, so if you'd like The Cactus Paradox to cover a show, please get in touch! I'll be doing offhand reviews of shows like the Crapfest one coming tomorrow, but I'm eager to discover new stuff and if there's no guest list, I'm happy to pay my way for your shows!

#5: What's Coming Up

In my May update, I gave a quick paragraph on what was coming that month, and essentially bottled it a third of the way into the month, so my schedule will be kept to Patrons only for the foreseeable future. As my brain goes a million miles a minute, I do have a structured plan for the next couple of months, but I've given myself enough room to do off-the-cuff posts and some breathing space for when it might get too overwhelming. However, I can promise this month that you will find out why Hurley is my favourite Weezer album, something about a one-hit wonder from the late 90s, and retrospectives on a London band that is sorely missed.

Right, I think that's everything covered that I wanted to put in this update, though I'm sure at 8am on the day this comes out, I'll find something to tack on! Buy tickets to our gigs, consider becoming a Patron, and be excellent to each other!
